PHILADELPHIA -- Senior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) had team-bests of 25 points and nine rebounds, but Caldwell couldn't rebound from an early 18-point hole, falling 84-71 at Jefferson in the CACC Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at the Gallagher Center.
The host Rams (16-12) built a 18-point edge early in the second half. But Caldwell battled back behind Bueno, who had four layups in a stretch that pulled CU back to within 10 at 64-54 midway through the second half.
After Jefferson extended its lead back to 15, the Cougars again rallied, with a Bueno jumper getting CU to within six at 73-67, the closest the game had been since the first half, with 4:38 to play.
But Jefferson was able to get its lead back to double digits and finished off the victory to advance to the semifinals.
Caldwell (18-11) also had double-digit efforts from sophomore guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) with 13, senior guard
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) with 11 and junior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) with 10. Evans also added four steals, five rebounds and three assists.
