CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman third baseman
Lindsay Oller (South Plainfield, N.J.) and sophomore right fielder
Rianna Sparandero (Middletown, N.J.) drove in multiple RBIs apiece to lead Caldwell softball to a doubleheader split with the Bentley Falcons in game 2 at Caldwell Athletics Field. Bentley won the opener 5-4. Oller led the Cougars with four RBIs and Sparandero had three RBIs.
Senior shortstop
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) got Caldwell on the board first with a RBI single in the 1st inning of game 1.
Bentley would take the lead in the next inning on a 2-run double.
The Cougars went back in front between the 3rd and 4th innings by scoring three runs to take a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore left fielder
McKenzie Nazionale (Ontario, Calif.) had an RBI single in the 3rd.
The Falcons however, scored three runs of their own in the 5th and 7th innings to retake the lead and hold on to win 5-4.
Game 2 was a seesaw battle that featured both teams going back and forth.
Bentley struck first with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning. Caldwell then knotted the score at two on a throwing error by the Bentley catcher and a RBI ground out by Oller in the bottom of the 1st.
CU tacked on four more runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings that was highlighted by a RBI double and a 2-run single by Sparandero. Senior second baseman
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) also had a RBI single.
Bentley cut the deficit to 6-4 on a 2-run double in the 4th. Oller would answer back in the bottom of the 4th with a RBI single to make it 7-4.
The Falcons blasted a 3-run home run in the 5th inning to tie the score at 7. Caldwell, undeterred, scored four straight runs in their half of the 5th to go back on top 11-7.
Vondracek hit a RBI double. Senior first baseman
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) had a RBI single that brought in Vondracek. Oller capped off the scoring with a 2-run single.
Tavaska led the Cougars with three hits and she had the only triple of the game.
Freshman pitcher
Haleigh Fisher (Smyrna, N.Y.) (2-2) earned her second win of the season.
Caldwell (8-13, 3-1 CACC) will travel to face the Felician Golden Falcons in Little Ferry, N.J. in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 PM on Tuesday.
