11-Run Inning Powers Caldwell Softball to Split With Southern New Hampshire University

Tavaska Hits First Home Run of Season in Opener

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Caldwell softball scored 11 in first inning of the second game of its doubleheader against SNHU, going on to win, 15-3, to split their doubleheader at Caldwell Athletic Field on Friday afternoon. The Penmen took the opener, 9-6.

CU struck first for three runs in the opener. Freshman third baseman Lindsay Oller (South Plainfield, N.J.) got the scoring started with an RBI double. Tavaska then drove in Oller with a two-run home run. It was Tavaska's third home run of the season.

Freschi added an RBI double in the 3rd to give Caldwell a 5-1 lead.

SNHU would take the lead with five runs between the 4th and 5th innings. They were up 7-6 after the 5th. SNHU then added some insurance runs with a two-run home run in the 6th.

Caldwell could not miss in the first inning of game 2. They had 10 hits and scored 11 runs. The big blows came from sophomore center fielder Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and freshman second baseman Maddie Matkosky (Horseheads, N.Y.) who both hit multi-run triples. Freschi went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Matkosky had three RBIs and one run scored.

The senior duo of first baseman Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) and shortstop Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) each had two RBIs in the win.

Senior designated player Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with three runs scored and a RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Katie O'Connor earned her 4th win of the season.
