CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior righthander
Jayden Hill (Geneva, N.Y.) spun a nifty three-hit shutout and senior SS
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) homered as Caldwell softball split a pair of non-league contests with New Haven on Tuesday at Caldwell Athletic Field. Senior 1B
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) had three RBI in the doubleheader as the Cougars took the opener, 9-0, and the Chargers (3-9) grabbed the nightcap, 6-1.
In game one, Caldwell (4-11) used a five-run second to take command. After Tavaska got the scoring going with a solo home run to lead off the frame, Caldwell scored on a double steal by sophomore outfielders
Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and MacKenzie Nazionale (Ontario, Calif.), with Nazionale on the front end. Senior 2B
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) brought in Freschi with a sacrifice fly, before Martin's double to left brought in two more.
After Freschi's single made it 6-0 in the third, CU pulled in three runs in the fourth, helped by three UNH errors, for the final margin.
Hill permitted two singles and two walks and struck out one for her first win of the season.
In the nightcap, UNH used a four-run sixth to break open a 2-1 game and take the win.
The Cougars continue their five-day, 10-game homestand on Friday with a non-league doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire at 1 p.m. at Caldwell Athletic Field.
