Men's Basketball Rallies to Upend Felician, 76-74

Bueno, Evans, Horn Score in Double Figures as CU Erases 11-point second half deficit in triumph

RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Senior forward Derrick Bueno (Palisades, Park, N.J.) scored a team-high 16 points and junior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior forward DeAngelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) pitched in 14 apiece, leading Caldwell (14-7, 6-4 CACC) to an emotional 76-74 triumph over Felician in a CACC men's basketball contest at JJJ Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Cougars led for most of the first half, extending a 21-20 lead to 27-20 on a run that included a driving layup and three-pointer by junior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) and layup by senior forward Derrick Bueno (Palisades, Park, N.J.), eventually settling in with a 32-30 edge at the intermission.

Felician (12-9, 5-6 CACC) came out strong in the second half, sprinting to a 49-41 lead in the first six minutes of the period. The Golden Falcons led by as many as 11 at 54-43. But CU battled back, retaking the lead with a 15-3 run for a 58-57 lead with under nine minutes to play.

Later, leading by two at 66-64 with 5:21 left, a pair of free throws by senior guard Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) started a 9-0 run that put CU up, 73-64, with 2:30 to play. Felician narrowed its deficit to 75-74 with five seconds left. Bueno then tossed the inbound pass full court, where Horn made an incredible diving leap to keep the ball inbounds and run the clock down to 1.4 seconds. Sophomore guard Jaiden Williams (New York) then made a free throw for the final margin.

Williams had nine point and five rebounds, while junior forward Moussa Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) had six points and six rebounds, including two put backs during the Cougars' comeback runs.

CU next hosts Jefferson on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Newman Center.
