LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Junior guard Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) pumped in a season-high 26 points but late free throws gave host Georgian Court a 79-77 men's basketball victory over Caldwell at the GCU Wellness Center in CACC action on Saturday afternoon.
A Philbert three pointer, his third of the day, with 1:20 to play put CU up, 77-76. But the Lions' Cam Edmonds hit two free throws with 1:02 left and after a Cougars miss hit one more with five seconds left for a two point GCU lead. The Cougars called a time out with two seconds left after getting the ball into the frontcourt, but were unable to get off a shot on the ensuing inbound as time expired.
Senior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) had 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, freshman forward Markeis Isley (Jersey City, N.J) had a career-best 13 and junior guard Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.) pitched in 11 to go with five assists and six rebounds for Caldwell (0-8, 0-3 CACC)
Edmonds's 27 led all scorers for the Lions (5-3, 2-0).
Caldwell next hosts Dominican at the Newman Center on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
