Esposito Steps Up As Senior Women's Hoops Leader

Back healthy, hopes to contribute more on the court in 2025-26

CALDWELL, N.J. -- After settling into a larger role off the Cougars bench as a sophomore in 2023-24, it looked like Gules Esposito was poised for a breakthrough year as a junior last year. A torn ACL scrapped those plans, so the nursing major was forced to make rehab and supporting her teammates the way to contribute.

Now back on the court healthy, the Staten Island native is back in the mix in the talented Cougars' backcourt, and ready to use her experience to help the Cougars in their quest for a CACC title.

She spoke to us this week about her career and goals for the upcoming season and beyond.

What is a team motto or a core value that will drive your team this season?

We have to be consistent in everything we do. We need to have the same energy, focus, effort and discipline every day. With this mindset, we will build habits that will lead us to a successful season.

What is the one thing you want fans to know about your team?

This team has a tremendous amount of talent, and each player brings their own unique skillset. We are able to feed off of each other's energy and really push ourselves to improve each day.

Who is a player on your team that we should be watching out for this season, and why

You should definitely be watching out for Lucy Coogan this year. She has been a key cog for our team for the past three years. She always gives 100% effort. Her great leadership and consistency is what sets the tone for our team.

What is one personal goal you're striving for this season?

Unfortunately, I suffered an ACL/meniscus injury halfway through my sophomore season. The recovery took much longer than expected so I also missed out on playing in my junior season. My personal goal is to come back even stronger, both physically and mentally, and to make the most of my final season as a Cougar.

What are you most looking forward to in your first season as a Senior Team Leader?

With me being a senior this year, I want my teammates to feel comfortable and come to me for any guidance and support they may need both on and off the court. I am also looking forward to continuing to build on our positive, consistent culture and Cougar spirit.

After you graduate, what are you hoping to do next?

After I graduate, I am planning on taking the NCLEX exam to get my RN license and begin working as a RN in the NICU. I hope to continue to be involved with basketball, whether it's through competing in a women's league or even training/coaching players.
