UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Senior QB Jameil Lawrence (Jersey City, N.J.) completed seven of 11 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns and senior offensive lineman Kevin Campen (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) scored his first career touchdown, leading Caldwell sprint football to a 40-7 win over Molloy at Mitchel Field Complex on Friday night.
The Cougars (3-2) rolled to a 26-0 lead with four second-quarter touchdowns. After the Cougars stopped the Lions (1-4) deep in CU territory on a drive which ended on a sack by senior linebacker Cole Levy (Manahawkin, N.J.), Lawrence led a nine-play, 68 yard drive, capped by a six-yard TD reception by sophomore WR Josh Smith (Piscataway, N.J.), who caught the ball at the two and reached the ball over the goal line with 13:10 left in the second quarter. Then after senior DB Kyle Lewis (Neptune, N.J.) intercepted a Molloy pass at the MU eight, junior RB Curt McDougald ran it in on the next play for a 14-0 Cougars lead.
Following a Molloy punt, Lawrence connected with freshman receiver Joey Ciccotelli (Denville, N.J.) on a 15-yard pass and immediately found senior receiver Arjun Petgrave (Cranford, N.J.) in the clear for a 37 yard score for a 20-0 Caldwell advantage.
Freshman Cael Zebrowski (Verona, N.J.) took over at QB and led the Cougars on a scoring drive of his own, a six-play, 30 yard drive that culminated in a 12-yard TD run by Campen, who lined up at fullback, took the handoff and scampered into the end zone on fourth-and-eight to end the first half.
It was more of the same to start the third quarter, as the Cougars took the second half kickoff and six plays and 75 yards later a seven-yard TD strike from Lawrence to Ciccotelli made it 33-0.
Then freshman linebacker Hector Lopez III (East Hanover, N.J.) strip-sacked the Molloy QB at the Lions' 15, and two plays later, sophomore RB Kyano Jimenez (Clifton, N.J.) ran it in from two for a 40-0 lead.
The Cougars defense was stout, forcing six Lions turnovers. In addition to Lopez's play, junior DB JJ Hinnant intercepted two passes, including one in the end zone, and sophomore LB Damian Tavares (Pasco, Wash.) also had a strip sack, returning the ball 30 yards to end a MU drive deep in Caldwell territory at the end of the third quarter.
McDougald finished with 84 yards rushing on nine carries, leading a ground effort of 253 yards by the Cougars offense. In his first extended play of the season, junior RB Nasir Tippett (Dunellen, N.J.) ran for 36 yards on seven tries. The 443 total yards racked up by CU is the second most in school history.
The Cougars next host Army on Saturday Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. at Bonnel Field.
