ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- For the second straight match, senior hitter/setter
Wyette Schubert-Brown (Chatsworth, N.J.) nearly secured a "triple-double," collecting nine kills, 11 digs and 15 assists as Caldwell volleyball fell in four sets at Dominican in a CACC contest at Hennessey Center on Wednesday evening.
Freshman RS
Meredith Gatz (Millis, Mass.) and junior hitter
Andrea Enabosi (Piscataway, N.J.) notched seven kills each while the defense was paced by the back line duo of senior DS
Torrien Jones (Camp Springs, Md.) and junior
Ava Railton (Santa Rose Beach, Fla.), who had 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
The Cougars raced off to a 13-7 lead in the first set, using a 5-0 run which included kills by Enabosi and freshman hitter
Kaybri Lowry and an ace by Lowry to establish the lead. Then, leading 13-8, the Cougars reeled off eight of the next nine points, kills by Gatz and Schubert-Brown capping the run, for a 21-9 advantage. Enabosi closed out the set with a kill after points by Mack and two by Gatz put the Cougars on the precipice.
In the second set, the hosts took the early lead, scoring 12 of the first 16 points. But the Cougars battled back, closing to within 15-14, with the last five of those coming on the strong serves of Jones. After a side out, a pair of kills by Schubert-Brown drew CU even at 16. But DUNY would score five of the next six points and eventually close out the set at 25-19.
In the third, it was again the Chargers (9-14, 2-4 CACC) who took early command, taking 11 of the first 13 points and building a 16-4 lead. The Cougars again battled back, closing to within 17-10, kills by Rudolph and Enabosi and an ace by senior setter
Jordan Mack (Yorba Linda, Calif.) keying the mini-rally. DUNY kept up the pressure and finished off the set, 25-12.
In the fourth, an early deficit proved the Cougars' undoing again, a 7-2 early Chargers edge forcing the visitors to play from behind. DUNY would not relent, taking the set 25-11 and the match.
The Cougars visit Georgian Court on Saturday at noon in their next action.
