CALDWELL, N.J. — Senior forward Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) converted a layup with 0:27 left to give Caldwell (12-5, 4-2 CACC) a scintillating 57-56 triumph over Post in a CACC men's basketball matchup at the Newman Center on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles (10-9, 4-3) took a two-point advantage at halftime, 25-23, then maintained the lead throughout a tight second half. After a layup by junior forward DeAngelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) got the Cougars to within a point at 56-55 with just over 2:00 left, a turnover gave CU a chance to take the lead, and Bueno converted the winning hoop.
Post had two chances, first missing the front end of a one-and-one, and after a Cougars missed free throw, had one final jump shot roll off the rim as time expired.
Horn led Caldwell with 13 points while Bueno and junior guard Kirk Parsons (Newark, N.J.) contributed 10 each. Bueno made it a double-double with a game-best 12 rebounds.
The Cougars had taken an early lead, jumping to a 15-8 start midway through the first half, a three-pointer by Parsons capping the run, which also featured threes by senior guard Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) and Horn.
But the Eagles rallied, leading by as many as four before a layup by sophomore guard Jaiden Williams (New York) in the waning seconds made it a 25-23 Post lead at the break.
The Eagles came out firing in the second half, scoring the first six points out of the gate for their largest lead at 31-23 in the first three minutes after intermission, leading by between three and six most of the second half before Bueno's heroics gave the Cougars the victory.
Caldwell next visits Chestnut Hill on Saturday at 3 p.m in Philadelphia.
