MANSFIELD, Pa. -- Junior forward
Alexa Peto (Toms River, N.J.) put in a nifty header in the 77th minute, vaulting Caldwell women's soccer into a 1-1 draw with Mansfield at Karl Van Norman Field in non-league action Saturday afternoon.
Trailing, 1-0, the Cougars (1-0-1) had the better of play most of the second half, but couldn't score despite several strong chances at net. Then following a corner kick, junior forward
Rosio Cardenas (Forked River, N.J.) sent a pass to the right of the goal, where freshman midfielder
Melissa Pires (Elizabeth, N.J.) chased it down, sending a perfect cross to the front of the net, where Peto redirected it just off the outstretched fingertips of the MU keeper from about eight yards out.
Caldwell kept up the pressure over the final 13-plus minutes but Mansfield (0-0-1) was up to the challenge.
The Cougars outshot the Mountaneers, 15-8, in the contest, including 12 shots on goal to just one by the hosts.
Junior goalkeeper
Ariana Gaminara (Las Vegas) permitted just the one goal in the first half to earn the draw.
Caldwell next visits Queens College in a non-league matchup on Wednesday in New York before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 14 in the home opener vs. Molloy.
