CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman catcher
Taylor Quinn (Colonie, N.Y.) collected five hits and junior 2B
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) totaled four hits and five stolen bases as Caldwell softball swept a CACC doubleheader from Jefferson, 5-2 and 12-1, at Caldwell Athletic Field on Sunday.
The Cougars (22-20, 10-10 CACC) built a 3-0 lead in the opener on the strength of a first-inning steal of second by Vondracek, who raced all the way home when the throw went into center field, and a two-run single by senior pitcher/DP
Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.). After the Rams (10-19, 4-14) edged to within 3-2, Winters lined a run-scoring double to bring in Quinn in the fifth, and Vondracek laced a double to score junior RF
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.), and freshman righthander
Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.) made it stand up with four innings of five-hit relief to earn her ninth win, in relief of Winters, who threw three hitless innings to start the game.
In the nightcap, the Cougars ended this one early with a nine-run first inning, which included 10 hits and four stolen bases. Vondracek drove in three runs with two hits and she and Klein scored twice in the frame.
Caldwell finished off the five-inning, run rule win with a three-run third, with RBI singles by Quinn and graduate 3B
Riley Riendeau (Lincoln, R.I.) capping the inning, making a winner of graduate righthander
Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.), who permitted just two hits over five innings, walking none and fanning three.
Klein and Junior shortstop
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) also had four hits in the twinbill as the Cougars racked up 26 in their 10 innings at bat.
Caldwell takes on Bloomfield on Monday beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Caldwell Athletic Field, with a chance to secure a CACC playoff berth with two wins, or one win pending some other league results.
