ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- Junior 2B
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) had six hits in the doubleheader, including 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in game two, helping Caldwell softball (17-15, 5-7 CACC) to a split at DUNY Softball Field on Wednesday.
After DU (6-21, 4-7) took the opener despite a 3-for-3 game by Klein, who is now hitting .421, and two-run home run by freshman catcher
Taylor Quinn (Colonie, N.Y.), the Cougars jumped out ahead early in the nightcap, plating three on a single by junior SS
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) and RBI hits by Quinn and junior 1B
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine). They extended to 5-1 in the second on a Vondracek home run, later adding runs on a two-RBI double by Quinn and sacrifice fly by graduate 3B
Riley Riendeau (Lincoln, R.I.).
That effort backed the five-hit pitching of senior righty
Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.). Winters (6-3) fanned four and walked none, lowering her ERA to 1.45, second best in the CACC.
Caldwell next hosts Bloomfield at Caldwell Athletic Field on Friday at a special 1 p.m. start time, in the makeup doubleheader from an earlier rainout.
