Michael Cruz's (Miami) had a grand slam home run in the opener and game-tying RBI single in the nightcap, leading Caldwell Baseball to a doubleheader sweep of CACC foe Goldey-Beacom (16-11, 2-3 CACC) at Kiwanis Oval on Tuesday.
In game one, the Cougars (6-9, 5-2) used a pair of four-run innings in the third and fourth to break open a tight game, with Cruz's third home run of the year in the third giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead and his RBI single an inning later capping the uprising. Cruz finished off his productive game with an RBI single in the sixth for the final margin. Negron (1-1) tossed a four-hitter, permitting three earned runs and fanning one.
In game two, Scalisi (3-2) was even sharper, allowing just two runs in seven innings, with no walks and five strikeouts punctuating the effort which included six shutout frames to close the game. Trailing, 2-0, the Cougars got one back in the first on a sacrifice fly by senior DH
Oscar Fajardo (Brentwood, N.Y.), then drew even on Cruz's single driving in Fajardo in the third. Senior LF
Zach Saunders (Adelphi, Md.) then brought in what proved to be the game-winner in the fourth with a groundout.
Winners of five of their last six, the Cougars break for Easter, then return to action next Tuesday at Queens.
