CALDWELL, N.J. -- Sophomore righthander Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y) struck out two over four innings and sophomore left fielder Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) drove in the Cougars' run in a 7-1 season-opening defeat at College of Staten Island on Friday morning at SIUH Community Park.

Young's fifth-inning double plated sophomore second baseman Malik Little (Bergenfield, N.J.) to pull CU to within 3-1 after Scalisi tossed two scoreless frames in the third and fourth innings.

Soph center fielder Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.), senior 1B Zach Saunders (Adelphi, Md.) and sophomore 3B Michael Cruz (Miami) had the other Cougars hits.

Caldwell (0-1) next visits Molloy on Tuesday.
