Caldwell Women's Basketball Scores Win over HFU Behind Lewis' 31, Coogan's 22

Big Second, Third Quarters Extend Lead in Win Over Regionally Rated Tigers

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman guard Jahnel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) knifed her way through the defense to the tune of a career-high 31 points and sophomore guard Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland) dropped in 22 as Caldwell women's basketball rode hot shooting for most of the game to a thrilling 75-67 win over Holy Family in CACC action at the Newman Center on Saturday.

Lewis had 10 of those 31 in the decisive fourth quarter, when the Cougars extended to their largest lead at 60-40 on the strength of a 12-0 run that began with 2:22 left in the third on a three pointer by soph guard Amyah Bray (Manchester, N.J.) and was capped by a layup by Lewis with 9:17 to play.

HFU (19-6, 9-4 CACC), rated No. 6 in the latest CSC East Region media poll, would battle back to within eight at 67-59 with 2:48 left, but two free throws by freshman guard Brianna Carey (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and later two more by Lewis helped secure the win for the Cougars (7-16, 3-10).

Coogan added a team-high nine rebounds, Lewis contributed three assists and three steals, and freshman guard Brooke Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) had five rebounds, five steals and three assists.

The Cougars next host Jefferson, which ranks No. 3 in the nation in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the CSC Media Poll, on Tuesday in a special non-conference battle at the Newman Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.
