HOCKESSIN, Del. -- Freshman
Malik Little (Bergenfield, N.J.) laced a two-out, two-run double in the top of the 10th for the go-ahead runs to support the stellar relief pitching of graduate righthander
Jerry Gamone (Union, N.J.) and give the Cougars an 8-6 victory in the first game of a CACC doubleheader at Goldey Beacom (21-11, 6-3 CACC). The Lightning took the nightcap, 3-1.
In the opener, Little, who entered the game at second base in the bottom of the seventh for defensive purposes, drilled a bases-loaded single to right, scoring junior RF
Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) and freshman DH
Christopher Bayo (Miami). Gamone then finished off the bottom of the tenth to complete his 3 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief and earn his second win.
Little and graduate shortstop
Waldy Arias (Plainfield, N.J.) each had two hits, and soph LF
Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) hit a fifth-inning grand slam that gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead. In addition to 10 hits in the game, the Cougars (8-18, 2-10) drew six walks and were hit by four pitches.
The Cougars trailed, 5-4 entering the seventh in the scheduled seven-inning contest. But graduate shortstop
Waldy Arias (Plainfield, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Then three pitches later, senior C
Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J.) broke for home and when the pitcher threw behind him, raced to the plate and was hit by the throw, scoring the go-ahead run on a steal. After the Lightning tied the game, Gamone entered to get the third out to send the game to extra innings, where he tossed three more scoreless frames to keep Caldwell alive until Little's heroics delivered the win.
In game two, Caldwell was held to six hits, two each by Arias and graduate CF
Joshua Lopez (Nanuet, N.Y.) and fell despite a strong performance on the mound by freshman righty
John Rigas (Lincoln Park, N.J.) who went all six innings.
Caldwell steps out of conference on Thursday for a single game at New Haven (3 p.m.).
