Putney Blasts Three Home Runs as Baseball Bows To Wilmington Twice

Arias also homers in opener

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior RF Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) had a solo home run in game one and two more in game, two as Caldwell baseball dropped a pair of games to Wilmington at Kiwanis Oval, 6-4 and 10-3.

In the opener, Putney's one-out blast got the Cougars on the board, starting a two-run inning that cut WilmU's (13-11, 6-1 CACC) lead to 4-2. After the Wildcats pushed across a run in the fifth, a solo shot by graduate shortstop Waldy Arias (Plainfield, N.J.) and RBI single by junior 1B Zach Saunders (Adelphi, Md.) cut the Cougars' deficit to 5-4. But the visitors held Caldwell off the board in the last two innings for the win. Senior DH Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J.) had two hits to pace the CU offense.

In game two, second-and fourth-inning solo homers by Putney weren't enough a seven-run third bouyed WilmU. Putney was 3-for-3 in the contest, adding a sixth-inning single. Freshman second baseman Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) reached base three times on two singles and a walk.

The Cougars step out of conference on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest at Queens to open a five-game road trip before returning to Kiwanis Oval on April 15 for a doubleheader with new CACC foe Bridgeport.
