NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- 
Emma Cooney had three hits including two doubles to pace a 17-hit attack as Caldwell softball gained a split in its doubleheader at Southern Connecticut with a 13-8 game two win. The Owls took the opener of the non-league twin bill, 5-4, in nine innings at Pelz Field.
In game one, the Cougars took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a tie-breaking, two-run single by senior 1B 
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). After the Owls (12-18) tied it in the bottom of the frame, the Cougars retook the lead on a single by 3B 
Alexa Lee (Blackwood, N.J.). But the hosts scored two in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
The Cougars (24-11) offense got rolling early in the nightcap, plating six in the second inning paced by RBI hits by senior 2B 
Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.), Rodriguez and Cooney, then scored five more in the third, with hits by  sophomore DP 
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine), freshman center fielder 
Olivia Magliacano (Berkeley Heights, N.J., sophomore RF 
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) and Cooney for an 11-2 lead. Rodriguez and Lee drove in the final two Cougars runs in the seventh, making a winner of graduate righthander 
Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.), who allowed two earned runs in four innings to lift her record to 8-2.
Klein, Rodriguez, Cooney, Lee and Martin each drove in two runs, while Klein, Lee, Martin and freshman catcher 
Delaney Ridgell (Mt. Airy, Md.) each scored two.
The Cougars visit Post on Wednesday in a CACC doubleheader, and return to Caldwell against Chestnut Hill on Thursday. Play on both days begins at 2:30 p.m.
