Softball Falls to Barry in Twin Bill

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- The Caldwell University softball team fell in a doubleheader to Barry University with the Buccaneers taking the opener 4-0 and won the nightcap 4-2.  
 
The Cougars fall to 0-4, while the Buccaneers improve to 16-13.  
 
In the opener, Caldwell was limited to two hits on singles by sophomore Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) and senior Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Klein and senior Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.) each recorded a stolen bases in the game.
 
Senior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) tossed four innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts to take the loss. Freshman Olivia Kennedy (Chenango Forks, N.Y.) pitched two innings in relief, allowing two runs on five hits.
 
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning as senior Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) singled with one out. Rodriguez singles to move Grundhauser to third and she scored on a groundout by sophomore Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.).
 
Barry tied the score at 1-1 in their half of the first and added three runs in the second to pull ahead 4-1.
 
Caldwell got a run back in the fourth as Rodriguez led off the inning with a double. Tavaska singled to move the runner to third and Cooney lifted a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner freshman Cameron Fehsal (Succasunna, N.J.).
 
Graduate Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) tossed five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits to take the loss. Graduate Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless inning, retiring all three batters she faced with one strikeout.
 
The Cougars continue their Florida trip as they travel to Lynn University for a doubleheader in Tuesday, March 14 at noon.
