Women’s Basketball Rallies Back From First-Half Deficit To Down Goldey-Beacom

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior Casey O'Shaughnessy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 14 points as the Cougars rallied back from a first-half deficit to defeat Goldey-Beacom College 63-60 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
 
The Cougars improve to 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in the CACC, while the Lightning drop to 5-10 and 2-3 in conference play.
 
Both teams got off to a slow start but the Lightning built a 17-9 lead early in the second quarter. Freshman Alisa Blalock (Uniondale, N.Y.) scored at the 6:29 mark to cut the score to 17-11. Goldey-Beacom pushed their lead to 26-15 before a late free throw by senior Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) trimmed the score to 26-16 at halftime.
 
The Lightning led by as much at 16 points at 34-18 early in the third quarter. The Cougars rallied with a 12-1 run as O'Shaughnessy drained a triple in the run. Graduate Saundra Cleckley (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) converted a three-point play, while senior Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) scored in the paint at the 6:24 mark to cut the score to 35-30.
 
Goldey-Beacom answered as they pushed ahead 46-35 late in the third quarter. Caldwell battled back with a 15-5 run that stretched in the fourth quarter. Freshman Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland) scored six points in the run, while Cleckley added four, including a lay-up at the 6:42 mark to put Caldwell ahead 51-50. The Lightning answered with a bucket on their next possession to retake the lead but senior Imogen Cook (North Berwick, Scotland) scored on a put back to put the Cougars ahead to stay at 53-52.
 
Coogan drained a three-pointer down the stretch, while Brown connected on a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.
 
O'Shaughnessy led the way with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Coogan added 11 points, while Cleckley tallied 10 points, six boards, three assists and four steals. Brown totaled eight points and three rebounds, while Morrison grabbed a team-best nine boards.
 
The Cougars travel to Post University for a CACC contest on Tuesday, January 10 at 5:30 pm.
