Déjà Vu Comeback: Softball Rallies in Final At-Bat for Second Straight Day to Defeat #8 Pace on Day Two NCAA D2 East Region Bracket

GARDEN CITY, N.Y.- Down to their final out in the seventh, Caldwell University softball senior Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) drilled a two-out, two-run single as the #4 seeded Cougars again rallied in their final at-bat to defeat #8 seed Pace University 3-2 on day two of the NCAA Division II Championship East Region 1 Bracket.
 
The Cougars advance to the East 1 Championship Round, where they will face top seed and host Adelphi University.
 
The Cougars improve to 39-15 overall and advance in the winner's bracket, while the Setters drop to 28-20 and they fell later in the day to Adelphi in the elimination game on Friday afternoon.  
 
For the second straight game, Caldwell again found themselves down heading into their final at-bat in the top of the seventh inning, this time trailing 2-1. Senior Chloe VanGorder (Harveys Lake, Pa.) singled with one out, while Thursday's hero senior Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) reached on an error. Following the second out of the inning, junior Taylor Mischler (Endicott, N.Y.) turned in a key at-bat as she battled through 11 pitches before drawing a walk on a 3-2 count. Rodriguez stepped into the hero role on Friday with a two-run single to score both runners, giving Caldwell a 3-2 lead.
 
Senior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) closed the door on the win, allowing one hit in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. Culver (18-7) turned in tremendous effort in the circle, tossing a complete game allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and struck out two to earn the win.
 
Esrlier in the game, Pace took a 1-0 lead with a run in the third inning. Caldwell answered in the fourth as freshman Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) led off with a single and advanced to third on a two-base error. Junior Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) lifted a sacrifice fly to even to score Klein with the tying run. The Setters pulled ahead with a run in the fifth to take a lead into the final inning.  
 
The Cougars advance to the East 1 Championship round on Saturday, May 14 against top seed Adelphi at 11 am. One win on Saturday for the Cougars will send them off to the East Region Championship, whereas Adelphi will need to post two wins to advance.
