Mischler’s Hits Walk Off Single in Game 2 Win as Softball Splits Wilmington On Senior Day

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University softball junior Taylor Mischler (Endicott, N.Y.) hit a walk-off single in extra innings in game two as the Cougars split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference twin bill against Wilmington University on senior day.

The Cougars move to 33-12 overall and 18-4 in the CACC, while the Wildcats end the regular season at 31-17 and 19-5 in conference play.

Caldwell got on the board in the third inning as freshman Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) led off with a double. Mischler grounded out to score Klein for the first run of the game.

Wilmington rallied back with three runs in the fourth and added one in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Caldwell got a run back in the fifth as Klein drew a one-out walk. She came around to score later in the inning on a single by freshman Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.).

The Wildcats added a run in the sixth but the Cougars answered with two runs in the sixth. Klein singled in one run and Caldwell scored a run on a Wilmington error to pull to within 5-4. Caldwell loaded the bases in the seventh but fell short to pushing across the tying run.

Senior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) tossed six innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on 10 hits, striking out six in the loss. Winters allowed one hit in her one inning in relief.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats took the early lead with a run in the first and two more in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Cougars got a run back in their half of the third as graduate Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) connected on a solo homerun.

Caldwell added a run in the fourth as freshman Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. She scored later in the inning on a single by senior Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.).

Tavaska pulled the Cougars even in the fifth as she reached on an infield single to score pinch runner senior Danielle Kroll (Tinton Falls, N.J.). Caldwell tacked on three more runs in the inning as senior Chloe VanGorder (Harveys Lake, Pa.) hit a sacrifice fly to score the go ahead run, while Stansell singled in a run. Caldwell added a run later in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Wilmington rallied in the seventh with three runs to pull even at 6-6 to force extra innings. Caldwell pushed across the winning run in the eighth as VanGorder drew a one-out walk. She moved to second on a sacrifice and reached third on a Klein single. Mischler drove in the VanGorder with the winning run on a single down the right field line to give the Cougars the split.

Senior Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) earned the win as she tossed a complete game, allowing six runs (three earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts to improve to 16-5.

Prior to the game, the program's three seniors Kroll, Sandoval and Stansell were honored for their contributions to the team during their careers.

The Cougars host Felician University for a conference doubleheader on Sunday, May 1 at noon in their home finale.
