Softball Sweeps Regional Foes Stonehill, Bentley to Improve to 3-1

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. The Caldwell University softball team swept regional foes Stonehill College and Bentley University at the Spring Games. The Cougars defeated the Skyhawks 5-1 and edged the Falcons 3-1 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

In the opening win over Stonehill, the Cougars took the early lead freshman Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) singled in the second and stole second. Senior Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.) followed with a two-out single to score Tavaska for the first run of the game.

Caldwell added to their lead in the third inning as the scored four runs. Junior Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) drove in a run on a single, while Tavaska connected on a two-run homerun in the inning.

Stonehill got on the board with one run in the third but senior pitcher Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) closed the door on a complete game effort. Daly earned her first win of the season, allowing one unearned run on six hits, while striking out six.

In the second game against Bentley, the Cougars got all their runs in the second inning as Tavaska reached base on an error to start the inning. Cooney followed with a two-run homerun for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Kaylin Brozaitis (Rancho Murieta, Calif.) drew a walk and scored on a run scoring triple by senior Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.).

Senior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) improved to 2-0 in the circle, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out six in a complete game.
