WILMINGTON, Del.- Caldwell University women's basketball graduate
Shanice Graves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored her 1,000th career point as the Cougars powered past Wilmington University 71-56 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 11-10 overall and 6-5 in the CACC, while the Wildcats fall to 1-14 and 1-9 in conference play.
Wilmington got off to a quick start as they pulled ahead 12-7 late in the opening quarter. The Wildcats expanded their lead to 25-15 midway through the second quarter.
The Cougars battled back as they closed the half with an 11-2 run as junior
Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) scored four points. Graves added a three-point play in the run and added her record setting back at the 1:15 mark to net her 1,000th career collegiate point as the Cougars closed the gap to 27-26 at halftime.
Caldwell continued their surge into the second half as they outscored Wilmington 23-13 in the third quarter. Junior
Casey O'Shaughnessy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored eight points in the quarter to help the Cougars pull ahead 49-40. Wilmington got as close as 55-50 at the 5:38 mark of the fourth quarter but Morrison answered with a three-pointer to spark a 13-4 run that gave the Cougars a double-digit lead to the final buzzer.
O'Shaughnessy led the way with 21 points (14 in the second half) along with four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Senior
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) finished with 17 points, eight boards, three assists and three steals. Graves totaled 12 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Morrison added nine points, five boards and five assists.
The Cougars host Nyack College for a CACC contest on Wednesday, February 9 at 5:30 pm.
