#7 Seed Women’s Soccer Falls to #6 Chestnut Hill in Penalty Kicks in CACC Semifinals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The #7 seed Caldwell University women's soccer team battled to a double overtime 0-0 draw before falling 3-1 in penalty kicks to #6 seed Chestnut Hill College in the Semifinals of the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Championship on the campus of Holy Family University.
 
The Cougars end their season 7-7-5 overall, while the Griffins stand at 9-5-5 on the season and advance to Sunday's championship final.
 
Caldwell, competing in their eighth CACC semifinal under head coach Nate Guagliardi and twelfth in program history, battled through two scoreless regulation periods in a relatively even game. Through regulation, Caldwell held the edge in shots 15-14.
 
The match headed to overtime where the Cougars posted two shots in the first overtime, while the Griffins netted three shots in the second overtime. Despite combining for 34 shots, shots were even at 17 with neither team able to slip one past the opposing keeper. Caldwell held the advantage in shots on goal 7-4 and corner kicks 3-1.
 
Senior Sarah Costanza (Morris Plains, N.J.) and sophomore Alexa Peto (Toms River, N.J.) tied for the team lead in shots with five each.
 
Freshman Ariana Gaminara (North Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded four saves in the game and in the process set the single season shutout record with nine.
 
As a team, the Cougars set the single season shutout record of nine, surpassing the record of eight last achieved in 2014. Caldwell also finished the season with five ties, also setting a single season program record.
 
As the match moved to penalty kicks, both teams missed on their first shot. In rounds two and three, Chestnut Hill converted their penalty kicks, while the Cougars missed in both rounds. Senior Brianna Lewis (Tucson, Ariz.) netted the Cougars lone PK in the fourth round, while the Griffins missed on their attempt. Chestnut Hill converted their penalty kick in the fifth round to clinch the 3-1 PK win.
 
Caldwell finished the season with seven victories, achieving seven or more wins for the 13th time in Coach Guagliardi's 16 seasons leading the Cougars women's soccer program. He ends the season with 142 career coaching victories with 16 CACC Tournament appearances and nine trips to the CACC semifinals.
