WATERBURY, Conn.- The Caldwell University baseball team closed out the regular season with a pair of wins against Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The Cougars took the opener 14-3 in seven innings and completed the sweep with an 8-3 win in the nightcap.

The Cougars even their record at 14-14 overall and 12-12 in the CACC, while the Eagles fall to 2-18 and 2-18 in conference play.

In the opener, Caldwell jumped out to an early lead as senior
Tavis Brunson (Westfield, N.J.) blasted a three-run homerun in the first inning. Brunson added a second homerun in the game as he hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning.

Graduate
Luis Rullan (Bloomfield, N.J.) drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth as the Cougars built an 11-2 after four innings. Rullan added a run scoring single in the sixth, while junior
Frank Lehmann (Colonia, N.J.) added an RBI single in the seventh.

Brunson went 2-for-5 in the opener with five RBI and two runs scored. Rullan went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Lehmann went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.

Senior
John Istvan (Dover, N.J.) earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season, tossing five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Eagles got on the board first with a run in the second inning. The Cougars answered in the third as they loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman
Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Lehmann gave the Cougars the lead with a run scoring single, while Brunson tripled to score two runs to put Caldwell in front 4-1.

Post closed the gap with two runs in their half of the third to cut the score to 4-3.

Caldwell added to their lead in the fifth as Rullan stole third and scored on a throwing error. In the seventh, Brunson doubled in one run, while Putney added an RBI single for the Cougars.

Michael Hess (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) earned the win in relief to improve to 2-2 on the season. He tosses 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and struck out 12.

The Cougars have qualified for the CACC postseason tournament as they finished in second place in the CACC North Division. They earned a first round bye and will host North #5 seed Post University in the CACC Championship Quarterfinals on Monday, May 10 at 3 pm at the Kiwanis Oval. Â
