WATERBURY, Conn.- Caldwell University women's lacrosse senior
Samantha Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) set the program's single game assist record as the Cougars were edged by Post University 18-17 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 2-1 and 2-1 in conference play.
Post jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the first 2:30 as graduate
Arden Kassaleh (Pompton Plains, N.J.) netted the lone Caldwell goal in the early going. The Cougars answered with three unanswered goals to pull ahead 4-3 with 16:31 left in the first half. Murphy scored twice and assisted on a goal by junior
Jenna Steelman (Mays Landing, N.J.) in the run.
The Eagles rallied with seven of the game's next eight goals as senior
Jules Wesler (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored for the Cougars during the Post run.
Junior
Emily Lasko (Jackson, N.J.) and Kassaleh added goals late in the half for Caldwell but Post netted a tally in the final minute to lead 11-7 at halftime.
Post added to their lead to start the second half as they netted two goals to push ahead 13-7. Senior
Marisa Amoresano (Denville, N.J.) and Kassaleh answered for Caldwell to cut the score to 13-9 with 24:52 to play in the game.
The Eagles answered with two goals but the Cougars battled back with four straight to cut the score to 15-13.
The teams traded goals as Kassaleh added to her game total with as goal at the 9:56 mark as the Cougars trailed 17-14 with just over eight minutes to play.
Caldwell rallied back with three unanswered goals to tie the game at 17. Murphy scored a goal at the 7:41 mark, while sophomore
Kelsey Maxwell (Center Moriches, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals, including the game-tying goal at the 4:51 mark.
Post netted the go-ahead goal with 3:55 remaining in the game and held off the Cougars down the stretch.
Murphy broke her previous school record with seven assists in the game. Kassaleh totaled five goals and six draw controls.
Junior
Mia Monacelli (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) recorded 19 saves in the game.
The Cougars travel to Thomas Jefferson University for a CACC contest on Saturday, April 17 at noon.
