Softball Sweeps Chestnut Hill; Take Game 2 in Final At-Bat

CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University softball team rapped put 16 hits in a 14-0 game one win in five innings, while the Cougars won in walk-off fashion in the nightcap as part of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over Chestnut Hill College.
 
The Cougars improve to 6-5-1 overall and 6-5 in the CACC, while the Griffins drop to 1-15 and 1-13 in conference play.
 
Caldwell scored in all four at-bats in the opener with four in the first inning. Sophomore Taylor Mischler (Endicott, N.Y.) and junior Chloe VanGorder (Harveys Lake, Pa.) posted run scoring doubles in the inning, while sophomore Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) ripped an RBI triple in the inning. Senior Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
 
Grundhauser drove in a run in the second with a single, while VanGorder doubled in a run. Junior Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.) doubled in a pair of runs as part of a five-run inning.
 
Grundhauser went 3-for-4 in game one with three runs and two RBI, while VanGorder finished with a 3-for-3 line and two runs scored with three RBI. Sandoval drove in three runs in the opener.
 
Junior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) earned the win, as she tossed four scoreless innings, allowing three hits. Sophomore Lindsey Davies (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched one scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout.
 
Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run first inning. The Cougars matched them in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with one out. Senior Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) drew a walk to force in a run, while Cooney drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Sandoval drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning to even the score at 3-3.
 
The Griffins retook the lead with a run in the third but the Cougars answered in the fourth. Freshman Valerie Joaquin (Long Beach, Calif.) tied the game with a run scoring single, while Mischler gave Caldwell a 5-4 lead with an RBI single.
 
Chestnut Hill tied the game with a run in the fifth and added two runs in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Caldwell rallied back in the bottom of the inning as junior Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an error. Mischler followed with a single to cut the score to 7-6. Grundhauser tripled in Mischler to tie the game at seven. Ramirez drove in the winning run as the Cougars completed the sweep.
 
Culver earned the win in relief to improve to 4-3 on the season as she went 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
 
The Cougars host Georgian Court University in a CACC twin bill on Tuesday, April 13 at 2 pm.
