CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball junior
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) dropped in 19 points as the Cougars fell short to Georgian Court University 72-53 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars fall top 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the CACC, while the Lions remain unbeaten at 5-0 and 5-0 in conference play.
Georgian Court jumped out to an 11-4 lead midway through the opening quarter. The Cougars battled back with eight straight points with Dits accounting for four points to put Caldwell ahead 12-11 with 3:11 remaining in the quarter.
The Lions retook the lead and took a 17-12 lead late in the quarter. Caldwell rallied back as they pulled even at 19 following a free throw by sophomore
Jessica Wagoner (Clifton Park, N.Y.) early in the second quarter.
Georgian Court extended their lead to 28-19 midway through the second quarter. Caldwell closed the half strong as sophomore
Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) drained a trifecta with 4:43 left in the half. Dits added a hoop and drained a pair of free throws in the final seconds to close the gap to 32-28 at halftime.
The Lions opened the second half with an early run to build a 40-30 lead. Brown netted a pair of triples, while Wagoner added a bucket to close the score to 40-38 with 4:03 left in the third quarter. Georgian Court pushed their lead to double digits early in the fourth quarter and held off the Cougars down the stretch.
Dits led the way with 19 points, six rebounds and two steals. Brown shot 3-for-6 from downtown, finishing with 13 points, four boards and two steals. Wagoner totaled 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
The Cougars return to action as they host Felician University on Thursday, February 11 at 6 pm in a CACC contest. The game will be streamed on the CACC Network at caccnetwork.com.
