FLUSHING, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball senior
Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va.) and freshman
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) paced the Cougars as they rallied past Queens College in the final five minutes to post a 66-61 victory in a non-conference tilt.
The Cougars improve to 4-3 overall, while the Knights fall to 2-2.
Queens led by as much as five points early in the game. The Cougars battled back as Heber nailed a pair of three pointers, while Cooper added a trifecta to help push Caldwell in front 23-19 at the 7:26 mark. The Cougars maintained their lead in the half but the Knights closed the gap to 37-35 at halftime.
The teams played a tight second half as they traded leads for most of the half. Queens held a three-point advantage at 57-54 with 5:25 before the Cougars made a late run.
Heber tied the game at 57 with a triple to spark a 10-2 run that pushed Caldwell in front down the stretch. Sophomore
Jarnel Rancy (Middle Island, N.Y.) and graduate
Gerald Blount (Jersey City, N.J.) added buckets to give the Cougars a 61-57 lead. Heber and Cooper connected on free throws in the waning seconds to thwart the Queens comeback.
Cooper led the way with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists. Heber shot 4-for-5 from downtown, finishing with 17 points, eight boards and three steals. Blount totaled 10 points and four boards, while Rancy tallied six points, six rebounds and four blocks.
The Cougars travel to Nyack College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest on Tuesday, December 7 at 8:30 pm. The game will be played at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on the campus of New Jersey City University.
