ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball senior
Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va.) scored a game-high 20 points as the Cougars win their third game in a row with a 77-51 victory over Mercy College to wrap up play at the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament hosted by Dominican College.
The Cougars improve to 3-1 overall, while the Maverick drop to 0-3.
Mercy took a six-point midway through the opening half and stretched it to as much as 10 points at 24-14 at the 5:21 mark. Caldwell closed the half with a 10-1 run as freshman
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) scored four points, while junior
Tyler Washington (Englewood, N.J.) capped the run with a bucket in the final seconds to pull the Cougars to within 25-24 at halftime.
The Cougars took control of the game as they opened the second half with a 22-7 run to take a double-digit lead. Freshman
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) drained a trifecta, while Washington added six points in the run. Sophomore
Jarnel Rancy (Middle Island, N.Y.) totaled six points, capping the run with a bucket at the 12:31 mark to give the Cougars a 46-32 lead. Caldwell maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way to post their third win in a row.
Cooper led the way with 20 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Washington finished with 15 points, four boards and three assists. Rancy totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The Cougars travel to Franklin Pierce University for a non-conference contest on Sunday, November 28 at 1:30 pm.
