Defenses Rule the Day in Sprint Football Five-Overtime Setback to Army in North Division Clash

Box Score WEST CALDWELL, N.J.- On a rainy and windy Friday night, defenses for both teams controlled the game as the Caldwell University sprint football team came up short in a five overtime heartbreaker 4-2 in a Collegiate Sprint Football League North Division clash.

The Cougars fall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the North Division, while the Black Knights improve to 5-1 and 3-0 in division play.

The teams played a scoreless game through regulation as both offenses were limited to under 200 yards of total yardage for the game. Army totaled 182 yards of total offense, while Caldwell was held to 125 yards of total offense. The teams combined for 13 fumbles and five lost fumbles in the game.

In overtime, both teams failed to score in the first three overtime periods. In the fourth overtime, both teams converted their two-point conversions to force a fifth overtime. Caldwell failed in their conversion, while the Black Knights were successful in their conversion to end the game.

Junior Frank DeMaio (Nutley, N.J.) tossed for 115 yards in the air on 8-for-23 passing, while sophomore Nadir Orsini (Jersey City, N.J.) led the receivers with two catches for 52 yards. Junior Jeremy Colon (Union City, N.J.) hauled in two receptions for 35 yards. Senior Carl Watson (Newark, N.J.) led the Caldwell rushing attack with 19 carries for 52 yards.

On defense, freshman Andrew Conklin (Long Branch, N.J.) and junior Michael Lohrmann (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) led the Cougars with 11 tackles each. Junior Jahmall Readus (Paterson, N.J.) added eight tackles, while sophomore Messiah Porter (Rutherford, N.J.) recorded a sack for the Cougar defense.

Prior to the game, the Cougars recognized their graduating seniors in Anthony Guarino (Tinton Falls, N.J.), Derek Michelman (Newton, N.J.), Christian Cornelius (Woodland Park, N.J.) and Watson. For Cornelius and Watson, they represent members from that joined the Caldwell sprint football program in its inaugural season in 2017.

The Cougars close out their 2021 season as they travel to Mansfield University for a CSFL North Division match-up on Saturday, November 6 at 1 pm.
