RUTHERFORD, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball freshman
Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) recorded 17 points as the Cougars powered past Felician University 75-55 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 8-19 overall and 8-10 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons fall to 4-21 and 3-15 in conference play.
Caldwell rolled out to a 12-4 lead as Morrison and senior
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) each netted three-pointers to help the Cougars build an early lead. The Golden Falcons cut the score to five points but Caldwell stretched their lead to double digits.
Lebron added a triple, while Morrison drained a jumper at the 7:16 mark of the second quarter to give the Cougars a 27-17 lead. Felician trimmed the score to 29-24 but the Cougars surged ahead to take a 40-28 lead at halftime.
The Golden Falcons got out to a fast start in the second half as they closed the gap to 45-40 midway through the third quarter. The Cougars pulled ahead as Lebron drained a trifecta, while Morrison connected on a jumper to push their lead to 54-42 late in the third quarter.
Felician cut the score to seven points early in the fourth but the Cougars pulled away with 11 straight points. Lebron drained three free throws and added a jumper, while Morrison also netted a bucket in the run as the Cougars surged ahead 67-49 late in the quarter.
Morrison led the way with 17 points and six rebounds, while Lebron totaled 16 points, six boards and three steals. Freshman
Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) tallied 12 points, three rebounds, five assists and four steals, while sophomore
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) finished with seven points and seven boards. Graduate
Alessia Smaldone (Malnate, Italy) posted six assists and three steals.
With the win, the Cougars secured a spot in the CACC Championship, which begins next week. Caldwell closes out the regular season on Saturday, February 29 at 1 pm as they host Bloomfield College for a CACC contest on senior day.
