BRONXVILLE, N.Y.- Caldwell University women's basketball graduate
Alessia Smaldone (Malnate, Italy) netted 25 points as all five starters netted double-digit points to help the Cougars surge past Concordia College 95-83 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 7-17 overall and 7-8 in the CACC, while the Clippers drop to 5-18 and 4-10 in conference play.
Caldwell scored the first five points of the game to take an early lead. Concordia rallied back as they pulled ahead 12-11 midway through the opening quarter. The Clippers pulled ahead by as much as nine points at 29-20 early in the second quarter.
The Cougars battled back with a 17-9 run to close out the first half. Smaldone netted six points in the run as Caldwell cut the score to 38-37 at halftime.
Caldwell broke the game open to start the second half as they opened the third quarter on an 18-6 run. Sophomore
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) drained a pair of three pointer to start the quarter, totaling 10 points in the run. Freshman
Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) added a trifecta, while senior
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) capped the run with a triple at the 5:14 to make to put the Cougars ahead 55-44.
The Clippers got as close as seven points late in the fourth quarter but Caldwell held off their run with six free throws in the final two minutes.
Smaldone posted her third double-double 25 points and 10 assists along with three boards. Dits posted 20 points and seven rebounds, while freshman
Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) totaled 13 points and seven boards. Lebron tallied 13 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Brown finished with 11 points and six boards.
The Cougars travel to Holy Family University for a CACC contest on Saturday, February 15 at 1:00 pm.
