Dits Nets 21 Points as Women’s Basketball Surges Past Felician

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball sophomore Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) netted 21 points as the Cougars defeated Felician University 66-53 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.  
 
The Cougars improve to 4-15 overall and 4-6 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons fall to 2-14 and 1-8 in conference play.
 
The Golden Falcons jumped out to an early lead as they led for most of the opening quarter. Felician led by as much as 10 points at 25-15 early in the second quarter.
 
Caldwell battled back with a 15-3 run to take a lead late in the quarter. Dits and senior Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) each drained three-pointers in the run. Freshman Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) added six points and capped the run at the 4:00 mark to put the Cougars ahead 30-28. Dits added a late bucket as Caldwell led 34-31 at halftime.
 
The Cougars surged ahead to start the second half as they opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run. Graduate Alessia Smaldone (Malnate, Italy) converted a three-point play, while Morrison connected on four free throws to extend their lead to 43-34 with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
 
Felician rallied back to cut the score to 45-44 late in the third quarter. The Cougars answered with nine consecutive points as Dits drained a trifecta to start the run. Dits capped the run at the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarter with a bucket to stretch the Caldwell lead to 54-44. The Cougars maintained their lead down to the final buzzer.
 
Dits led the way with 21 points, four rebounds and two steals. Morrison posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds along with two blocks. Smaldone finished with 16 points, five boards and four assists.
 
The Cougars host Nyack College for a CACC contest on Wednesday, January 29 at 5:30 pm.
