CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team came up short Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The Cougars fell 18-4 in the opener and came up short in the nightcap 7-3.
The Cougars fall to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the CACC, while the Chargers improve to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in the CACC.
In the opener, Dominican took the early lead with three runs in the first inning. Caldwell got a run in their half of the inning as freshman
Frank Lehmann (Colonia, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk. Lehman stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an infield single by senior
Anthony Parente (Jackson, N.J.).
The Chargers pushed ahead 9-1 before the Cougars added three in the third. Lehmann led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by junior
Tavis Brunson (Westfield, N.J.). Parente reached on a fielder's choice to score Brunson. Senior
Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior
Joseph Mitchell (Bogota, N.J.) followed with singles to load the bases. Junior
Luis Rullan (Bloomfield, N.J.) ripped a two-run single to score Marino and Parente.
Freshman
Peter Loumakos (Jackson, N.J.) took the loss, tossing three innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits.
In the nightcap, Dominican took a 3-0 lead but the Cougars loaded the bases in their half of the fourth inning. Rullan was hit by a pitch, Lehmann doubled and Parente was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Senior
Chris Herrera (Passaic, N.J.) drove in a pair of runs with a single.
Caldwell tied the game in the fourth as Rullan singled with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lehamann singled to score Rullan and tie the game at 3-3.
The Chargers retook the lead with a run in the sixth and added three in the seventh.
Freshman
Jerry Gamone (Union, N.J.) took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings in relief.
The Cougars travel to Goldey-Beacom College for a CACC doubleheader on Monday, March 25 at noon.
