CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University senior
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) drained a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left in the game to lift the Cougars to a 63-61 win over Stonehill College in a non-conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 6-5 overall, while the Skyhawks fall to 7-5.
Stonehill opened up a 21-15 midway through the opening half. Covington drained a pair of three pointers later in the half but the Cougars trailed 30-24 at halftime.
The Skyhawks pushed their lead to 37-28 early in the second half. Caldwell battled back with seven straight points as sophomore
Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va.) drained a triple. Covington and senior
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) added buckets to close the gap to 37-35.
Stonehill answered as they extended their lead back to six points at 48-42 near the midway point of the second half. Cooper drained a triple, while junior
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) added a pair of free throws to cut the score to 48-47.
The score remained with four points the rest of the way as Stonehill held a 61-58 lead with 1:58 left in the game. Dorme drained a pair of from the line to trim the score to 61-60.
Caldwell drew on offensive foul on the ensuing Skyhawks possession to set up Covington's game-winner with 1.5 seconds on the clock.
Covington led the way with 17 points, four boards and three assists. Cooper drained four three-pointers as he finished with 15 points and three rebounds. Johnson-Alford added six points and six boards.
The Cougars close out the first half of their season as they travel to Division I Rutgers University on Monday, December 30 at 7 pm.
