ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball sophomore
Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va.) tallied 24 points as the Cougars were edged by The College of Saint Rose 90-88 on the first day of the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament hosted at Dominican College.
The Cougars fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Golden Knights improve to 2-1.
The teams traded leads through early in the first half as the Cougars held a two-point lead at the 13:23 mark. Senior
Ruud Lutterman (Dalem, Netherlands) converted a three-point play in the early going, while senior
AJ Kittles (Glassboro, N.J.) drained a three-pointer. Cooper added a three-point play, while junior
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) connected on a basket for a 19-17 lead.
Saint Rose pulled ahead by as much as eight points late in the half at 39-31 but Caldwell rallied back. Cooper and freshman
Gabe Johnson (Bloomfield, N.J.) each netted trifectas, while Dorme tied the game at 46 with one minute to play. Saint Rose drained a late triple to lead 49-46 at halftime.
The Cougars battled back early in the second half as Cooper converted a four-point play to tie the game at 53. Saint Rose pushed ahead as they led by as much as 12 points with under seven minutes left in the game.
Caldwell rallied back with a 15-4 run to close the gap to one point late in the game. Lutterman netted five points, while Cooper drained a triple. Senior
Ned Ogoemesim (Westampton, N.J.) connected on a three-pointer with 2:06 left in the game to cut the score to 88-87. The Golden Knights answered with a basket on their next possession and held on down the stretch.
Cooper led the way with 24 points and three assists, while Lutterman dropped in 20 points, six boards and two steals. Senior
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) totaled 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Kittles chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds. Dorme posted 10 points and two steals, while Johnson finished with six points, six assists and three boards.
The Cougars wrap up play at the Dominican College Tournament on Sunday, November 17 as they face Saint Michael's College at 5 pm.
