Kassaleh Nets Four Goals as Women’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short to Bridgeport

WEST CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's lacrosse sophomore Arden Kassaleh (Pompton Plains, N.J.) tallied four goals as the Cougars came up short to the University of Bridgeport 13-10 in a non-conference game.

The Cougars fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Purple Knights improve to 2-5.

Bridgeport got on the board with a goal three minutes into the game. The Cougars rallied with three straight goals to take the lead. Kassaleh tied the game at the 22:39 mark off an assist from freshman Samantha Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.). Junior Jessica Collum (Wayne, N.J.) added a goal, while junior Rachel Lucia (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) scored to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Purple Knights rallied back to tie the game at three. Junior Maryellen McCarthy (Levittown, N.Y.) put the Cougars back in front with a goal at the 10:42 mark, while Kassaleh netted a goal with 7:17 left in the half.

Bridgeport answered with two goals to even the score at five with four minutes to play. Kassaleh scored 17 seconds later off the draw control to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead at halftime.

The Purple Knights tied the game early in the second half but senior Pamela Schenck (East Moriches, N.Y.) answered to put the Cougars back in the lead. The Purple Knights netted a pair of goals to pull ahead 8-7 with 25:12 left in the game.

McCarthy scored off an assist from Schenck assist to tie the game at eight. Bridgeport rallied with two goals to push back in front 10-8 midway through the half.

Kassaleh netted a goal off a Schenck assist to cut the score to 10-9. Murphy tied the game at 10 with a goal at the 7:26 mark. The Purple Knights retook the lead as they scored three goals over the final six minutes to take the win.

Kassaleh totaled four goals, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Schenck (1G-2A) and McCarthy (2G-1A) each totaled three points in the game. Murphy finished with five draw controls, while Lucia posted three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Junior Nancy Benedetto (Jupiter, Fla.) recorded 18 saves in the loss.

The Cougars host Chestnut Hill College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest on Monday, April 2 at 4 pm at Essex Valley Field.
