Bernstein Drives in Four Runs as Baseball Rally Falls Short to Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y.- Caldwell University baseball senior Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a homerun and drove in four runs as the Cougars came up short to Queens College 12-11.
 
The Cougars fall to 0-9 on the season, while the Knights improve to 6-7.
 
Caldwell took the early lead as they scored seven runs in the first two innings. In the opening inning, the Cougars loaded the based with two outs as senior Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice, while sophomore Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) drew a walk. Bernstein singled to load the bases. Queens committed a two-out error that allowed all three runners to come around to score.
 
The Cougars added to their lead in the second inning as senior William Levier (Monroe Township, N.J.) reached base on an error to start the inning. He moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a DeSanti double. Zosulis drew a walk and Bernstein followed with a three-run homerun to put the Cougars up 7-0.
 
Queens battled back with two runs in the second to cut the score to 7-2. Zosulis blasted a solo homerun in the fourth inning but the Knights tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth to slice the score to 8-4.
 
The Knights rallied back in the sixth inning as they took advantage of three errors to score eight runs to pull ahead 12-8.
 
Caldwell wasn't finished as they rallied back in the ninth inning.  DeSanti led off with a single, while sophomore Dustin Walicky (Belleville, N.J.) singled. Bernstein drove in a run with a double to put runners at second and third. Walicky and Bernstein scored on ground outs to close the gap to 12-11 but came up short to tying the game.
 
Sophomore Michael Hess (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) went the first 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Senior Justin Picinic (River Vale, N.J.) took the loss to fall to 0-1 as he allowed seven runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Freshman Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) pitched two scoreless innings.
 
The Cougars travel to Pace University on Wednesday, March 21 for a 3:30 pm non-conference contest.
