CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball sophomore
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) tied a NCAA-era program record with eight three-pointers as the Cougars cruised past Chestnut Hill College 109-49 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Quarterfinals. The Cougars advance to the CACC Championship Semifinals for an eighth straight season and will face the top overall seed in the tournament USciences on Saturday, March 3 at noon on the Jefferson campus.
The Cougars set the NCAA-era program record for three-pointers in a game with 16 as well as setting the program record in points scored in a game with 109. The previous points record was set on January 15, 2005 as the Cougars defeated Goldey-Beacom College 108-52. Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.), who also drained eight triples on February 11, 2017 against then-Philadelphia University (now Jefferson).
The Cougars improve to 24-5 overall as they advance to the CACC semifinals, while the Griffins end their season at 19-10.
Caldwell led from the first possession as they scored the first five points of the game. The Cougars pulled ahead 19-9 late in the opening quarter but the Griffins closed the gap to six points with under two minutes to play.
The Cougars closed out the quarter strong as Drogsler and senior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) each drained triples in the final two minutes. Senior
Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) scored in the paint just as time expired to put the Cougars ahead 27-16 after the first quarter.
Caldwell broke the game open in the second quarter as they outscored Chestnut Hill 29-9. The Cougars shot 11-for-17 and limited the visitors to 3-for-14 in the quarter. Caldwell opened with 10 unanswered points led by five from senior
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.). Sanders added a bucket, while Drogsler connected on a three-pointer to extend their lead to 37-16 at the 6:44 mark. Drogsler, Lebron and junior
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) each drained triples over the final five minutes to help Caldwell build a 56-25 lead at halftime.
The Cougars maintained their hot shooting into the second half as they shot 19-for-29 over the final 20 minutes aa well as shooting 8-for-11 from downtown. Lebron shined in the second half as she connected on 7-of-8 from behind the arc to total 21 points. Lennon's drive and lay-up with under a minute to play set the program points record.
The Cougars had six players finish in double figures in scoring on a record setting night. Lebron led the way as she shot 8-for-12 from downtown, finishing with 24 points and three assists. Drogsler tallied 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Sanders totaled 15 points, three boards and four assists. O'Driscoll posted 15 points and seven rebounds, while Kelty chipped in 12 points, seven boards, three steals and two blocks. Lennon finished with 12 points and eight assists.
The North #2 Cougars takes on South #1 USciences in the CACC Championship Semifinals on Saturday, March 3 at noon at the Gallagher Center on the Jefferson campus.
