CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) netted a season-high 26 points as the Cougars cruised past Nyack College 75-50 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 21-4 and maintain their lead in the North Division with a 14-2 mark in the CACC. The Warriors fall to 2-24 and 2-15 in conference play.
The Cougars trailed early as Nyack jumped in front 9-3 in the first four minutes of play. Caldwell erased their deficit with a 10-0 run to close out the opening quarter to take a 13-9 lead. Senior
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) tallied six points in the run to vault the Cougars into the lead.
The Warriors closed the gap to two points at 16-14 midway through the second quarter but Caldwell posted a strong finish to end the first half. The Cougars used a 16-2 run over the final six minutes of the half to pull ahead by double digits. Drogsler drained a triple and totaled seven points in the run. Sanders added five points as Caldwell pulled ahead 32-16 at halftime.
Nyack got as close as 11 points late in the third quarter but the Cougars maintained their double-digit lead throughout the second half.
Sanders finished with a season-high 26 points (17 in the second half) along with three boards, four assists and four steals. Drogsler shot 3-for-7 from downtown as she totaled 20 points (16 in the first half) along with seven rebounds, three assists and five steals. Senior
Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) chipped in eight points and three boards, while sophomore
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) posted five points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) contributed four points, three assists and three steals.
The Cougars host Jefferson University on Saturday, February 17 at 1 pm at the Newman Center. It will feature "Super Saturday" with Caldwell Athletics alumni in attendance. At halftime of the women's game, Caldwell Basketball alumnus Danielle Ciresi Murphy '91 will be inducted into the CACC Hall of Fame by CACC Commissioner Dan Mara. Saturday's game will also be the NCAA Division II Showcase game and will be streaming live on ESPN3 and the ESPN Watch app.
