ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball sophomore
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) totaled 15 points but the Cougars fell to Dominican College 75-71 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars fall to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in the CACC, while the Chargers improve to 10-4 and 4-1 in conference play.
Caldwell rolled out to an early lead behind four points from senior
Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y.). Johnson-Alford added three points in the run the Cougars pushed ahead by eight points. Sophomores
Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa.) and
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) capped the run with triples to put Caldwell in front 15-7 at the 13:56 mark.
Dominican rallied back as they took a 22-17 lead midway through the opening half. The Cougars closed the gap to one point after a pair of free throws by sophomore
AJ Kittles (Glassboro, N.J.) with 4:01 to play in the half. The Chargers held off the Cougars late as the Chargers led 34-30 at halftime.
The Cougars pushed back in front early in the second half with a 17-7 run. Jennings opened the half with a triple, while Johnson-Alford added a three-point play in the run. Freshman
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) capped with run with a bucket at the 13:03 mark to give the Cougars a 47-41 lead.
Caldwell extended their lead to eight points late in the half at 60-52 with 6:41 left in the game. The Chargers rallied back to tie the score at 64 with 3:41 remaining in the game.
Dominican took the lead on a three-pointer at the 3:19 mark but Covington's bucket with 2:20 to play evened the score at 67. The Chargers scored on a back to back possessions to take a four-point lead and hit three free throws in the final minute to hold off the Cougars.
Johnson-Alford led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Covington finished with 15 points. Dorn totaled 14 points, three rebounds and two assists. Jennings chipped in nine points, three boards and four assists. Sophomore
Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands) posted six points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Kittles contributed six points and five rebounds.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday, January 10 for a CACC contest against Wilmington University at 7:30 pm at the Newman Center.
