#25 Softball Improves to 10-0 in CACC with Sweep over Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, N.J.- The #25 Caldwell University softball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College to remain unbeaten in conference play. The Cougars took the opener 9-1 in five innings and completed the sweep with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.  
 
Caldwell improves to 18-9 overall and 10-0 in the CACC, while the Bears fall to 11-7 and 2-6 in conference play.
 
The teams battled through three scoreless innings but Caldwell broke through in the fourth inning. Junior Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif.) drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and eventually moved to third base. Senior Amy Hickman (Jackson, N.J.) singled home Silva for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Cougars pulled ahead in the fifth inning as they scored eight runs. Freshman Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) had two doubles in the inning and drove in three runs for Caldwell. Silva and sophomore Katie Nichols (Acworth, Ga.) both had run scoring singles in the inning. Bloomfield got a run back in the bottom of the fifth but senior starter Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, N.J.) closed the door on the rally.
 
Ponto tossed a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four.
 
In the nightcap, Caldwell got on the board in the opening inning as freshman Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) blasted a solo homerun for a 1-0 lead. Junior Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) drew a walk and sophomore Carly Testa (Sicklerville, N.J.) followed with a double. Senior Lauren Frye (Jupiter, Fla.) singled in Monasseri to push their lead to 2-0.
 
Bloomfield got a run in the third inning but Caldwell loaded the bases in the fourth inning. Monasseri drew a walk to force in a run to extend the lead to 3-1. The Cougars added two runs in the sixth as Nichols reached on an error and Monasseri drew a walk. Testa pushed the lead to 5-1 with a two-run double. The Bears got two runs in the seventh but Ponto got the final out as Caldwell took the nightcap.
 
Ponto (12-3) earned the win in relief as she tossed five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out eight. Johnston tossed the first two innings, allowing one run on five hits.
 
The Cougars travel to Felician University for a CACC doubleheader on Thursday, April 6 at 2:30 pm.
