CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, N.Y.) shined on senior night to help lead the Cougars to an 83-68 victory over Concordia College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. With the win, Caldwell claims the North Division crown and will host #4 seed from the South in Philadelphia University on Saturday.
The Cougars improve to 23-4 overall and 18-1 in the CACC, while the Clippers drop to 8-19 and 8-11 in conference play.
Concordia jumped out to an early lead as they pulled ahead 18-10 late in the opening quarter. Pilla and junior
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) scored late to pull the Cougars to within six at 20-14 after one quarter of play.
Caldwell stepped up the defense in the second quarter as they held Concordia to one field goal and limited the Clippers to six points. Sophomore
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) drained a pair of triples, including the go-ahead basket with 7:22 left in the quarter. Pilla added a triple and totaled seven points in the quarter as the Cougars outscored Concordia 19-6. Junior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) and Pilla each totaled nine first half points to put the Cougars ahead 33-26 at halftime.
The Clippers closed the gap early the second half as they cut the score down to 38-33 with 5:21 left in the third quarter. Caldwell pulled away with a 22-4 run to push their lead into double digits. Lennon netted four points in the run, while Pilla totaled 13 points. The senior guard drained three triples and capped the run with a tip-in early in the fourth quarter to push the score to 60-37. Caldwell maintained their lead to the buzzer to claim the North Division title.
Pilla turned in a standout effort on senior night as she tallied 25 points, three boards and four assists. She shot 10-for-16 from the field and was 5-for-9 from downtown. Sanders chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Lennon shot 3-for-5 from behind the arc as she finished 15 points, five assists and three rebounds. O'Driscoll posted eight points and eight rebounds for the Cougars.
The NCAA released it first regional rankings of the season last week with the Cougars coming in at #4 in the East Region. The top-8 teams in the region advance to the NCAA Division II Championship. The next poll will be released on Wednesday, February 22.
The North Division Champs will host #4S Philadelphia University in the CACC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 25 at 2 pm at the Newman Center.
