CALDWELL, N.J.- Sophomore
Ahmad Harrison (Newark, N.J.) tallied a career-high 20 points as the Caldwell University men's basketball team defeated Felician University 78-65 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
The Cougars improve to 14-11 overall and 9-8 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons drop to 10-16 and 7-11 in conference play.
Caldwell got off to a quick start as they led 8-1 in the first two minutes. Freshman
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) scored five points, while Harrison drained a triple to put the Cougars out to an early advantage.
Harrison added a pair of free throws and a rare four-point play at the 16:45 mark to help the Cougars build a double digit lead. Freshman
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) added a triple, while Harrison and freshman
Ruud Lutterman (Gorinchem, Netherlands) added buckets to put Caldwell ahead 21-9 with 14:08 left in the first half.
Felician closed the gap to six points late in the half at 28-22 with 5:49 remaining in the first half. Senior
Austin Woods (Milford, Conn.) answered with a pair of lay-ups, while Johnson-Alford added a bucket in the paint. Freshman
Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa.) drained a trifecta to stretch the Caldwell lead to 37-25 at the 2:35 mark. The Golden Falcons trimmed the score in the final two minutes but the Cougars held a 38-30 lead at the break.
Caldwell scored the first seven points of the second half as they extended their lead to 45-30 at the 16:46 mark. Harrison scored in the paint, while Woods scored four points to help the Cougars push ahead by 15 points. The Cougars led by as much as 18 points near the midway point of the second half at 64-46.
Felician rallied back as they cut the score down to five points at 65-60 with 5:45 left in the game. Jennings responded with a key jumper, while Johnson-Alford added a fast break dunk. Covington drained a triple at the 2:23 mark to extend Caldwell's lead back to double digits, which they maintained to the final buzzer.
Harrison drained 3-of-5 from downtown as he finished with a career-high 20 points along with three boards. Jennings chipped in 16 points (4-of-9 from downtown) and three rebounds. Derek Dorn (New Rochelle, N.Y.) dished out a game-high nine assists. Covington totaled nine points, five assists and three rebounds.
The Cougars travel to Bloomfield College for a key CACC North Division clash against the Bears on Saturday, February 18 at 3 pm.
