LAKEWOOD, N.J.- The Caldwell University women's basketball team remained unbeaten to start the season as they held off Merrimack College 66-64 to wrap up play at the Georgian Court University Lions Invitational.
The Cougars improve to 2-0, while the Warriors fall to 1-1.
The teams traded leads in the opening quarter, which featured four ties. Sophomore
Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J.) drained a triple, while junior
Kristen Siscamanis (Winthrop, Mass.) added a late bucket to give Caldwell a 20-15 lead after the first quarter.
The Cougars stretched their lead to double digits in the second quarter as they led by as much as 13 points. Caldwell held a 38-27 lead at halftime.
Caldwell maintained a double digit lead into the fourth quarter until Merrimack made a late run. The Cougars led by as much as 16 points at 62-46 but the Warriors closed the gap down the stretch.
Merrimack trimmed the score to 62-59 with two and a half minutes left in the game. Senior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) drained a pair from the free throw line to push the score back to five points but the Warriors battled back to tie the score at 64 with 1:20 left in the game.
Siscamanis drained the go-ahead jumper with 1:02 left in the game as the Cougars generated a steal in the final minute to secure their second win of the season.
Senior
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the win. Sanders finished with 15 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals, while Siscamanis chipped in 10 points and nine boards. Senior
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) posted nine points and five rebounds, while Lebron added nine points and three boards.
The Cougars welcomes LIU Post on Thursday, November 16 for their home opener at the Newman Center at 5:30 pm.
