CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball sophomore
Rachel Simon (Wallkill, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 21 points to help lead the Cougars past Chestnut Hill College 92-75 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 13-3 overall and 8-0 in the CACC, while the Griffins drop to 9-6 and 5-4 in conference play.
The teams traded leads in the early going but Caldwell seized control as they pulled ahead 10-5. Senior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, N.Y.) connected on a pair of lay-ups, while junior
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) converted a three-point play with 6:12 left in the opening quarter. The Griffins trimmed the score down to two points late in the quarter. The Cougars pushed ahead as Simon drained late triple to put Caldwell ahead 30-19 after one quarter.
Simon added triple early in the second quarter as Caldwell extended their lead to 38-21 at the 8:52 mark. Chestnut Hill slowly chipped away as they closed the gap to 10 points at 47-37 with 1:32 to go in the first half. The Cougars added a bucket just before the buzzer as Simon tipped in a missed shot as time expired to give Caldwell a 49-37 lead at halftime.
The Griffins rallied in the second half as they cut the score down to single digits midway through the third quarter. Simon converted a three-point play at the 2:08 mark to push the Cougars lead back to 10 points at 63-53.
Chestnut Hill continued to keep it close as they cut the score down to three points early in the fourth quarter at 67-64. Caldwell pulled away with a 13-0 run to push their lead back into double digits and held the lead the rest of the way. Junior
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) connected on a shot-clock beating triple to start the run, while Simon drained a pair of trifectas. O'Driscoll added a basket with 4:01 to play in the game to put the Cougars ahead at 80-64.
Drogsler led the way with 24 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the win. Simon finished with a career day as she shot 4-for-6 from downtown, totaling 21 points. O'Driscoll tallied 16 points, nine boards and two blocks. Junior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Sophomore
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) dished out six assists, while junior
Maura Kelty (Barrington, R.I.) grabbed eight rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, January 14 as they travel to Wilmington University for a CACC clash at 1 pm.
