Volleyball Sweeps on Day Two of the ESU Tournament

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.- Junior Katrina Janssen (Seville, Australia) totaled 25 kills and 10 total blocks to help lead the Caldwell University volleyball team to a pair of victories on Day One of the East Stroudsburg University Tournament. The Cougars defeated Lincoln University 3-0 and completed a perfect second day with a thrilling 3-2 win against the host Warriors.

The Cougars improve to 3-1 on the season while the Lions fall to 0-4 and the Warriors drop to 2-2.

In their win against Lincoln, Caldwell won in three sets, taking the match 25-12, 25-16 and 25-6. Junior Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the way with 12 kills and six aces, while Janssen totaled 10 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Jordan Hoffman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded eight kills and 20 assists, while junior Gabrielle Bennett (San Antonio, Texas) finished with 19 assists and two aces. Junior Jessica Mitchell (Plainfield, Ill.) led the team with 16 digs, while freshman Kathleen Compagno (Orland Park, Ill.) added six kills, two aces and three blocks.

The Cougars kept their momentum into their final match of the tournament as they outlasted the host Warriors in five sets. Caldwell fell in the opening set 25-19 and bounced back to win 25-18 and 25-19. ESU took the fourth set 28-26 and the Cougars took the match 15-10 in the fifth and deciding set.

Janssen led the Cougars with 15 kills, eight total blocks and five digs. Auyong chipped in 12 kills and 18 digs, while Compagno totaled nine kills and six blocks. Freshman Avery Stanechewski (Tampa, Fla.) recorded eight kills and four blocks, while sophomore Melanie Krpec (Katy, Texas) contributed seven kills and 12 digs. Hoffman finished with 26 assists, two aces and 18 digs, while Mitchell posted a match-high 31 digs.

The Cougars open their home schedule as they host Molloy College on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 pm at the George R. Newman Center.
